What is Amazon affiliate marketing program?

That’s a broad question. Let me try to break it down for you.

Big Picture
Amazon has literally billions of products in their marketplaces. One way that they bring customers to Amazon .com and other country marketplaces is via traffic from bloggers and other website owners.
The website owners will list products that they think their audience/visitors might be interested in. If someone follows one of these links and buys anything at Amazon in the next 24 hours - the referring site owner gets a commission. The website owner is an Amazon affiliate.
That’s it.
As a website owner, you are an independent sales rep for Amazon and paid whenever one of your visitors buys something. Amazon provides very easy to use tools to let you build links that have your affiliate id in them. There are a number of options for the links (size, text only, graphic, etc.) You put these links on your site.
Amazon will pay you a % of the total sale. The amount varies by department. Here is the current commission schedule.

Why Amazon
They have such product depth that every niche and topic has related products. But I think the biggest reason is trust. Amazon dominates the online shopping world. Everyone knows them. You receive a positive benefit by being associated with them.
They are particularly good for new people interested in online marketing. They are a great place to start. Here’s some more information on why Amazon is a good starting point.
Does it Work
Sure.
It does require a fair amount of traffic.
Only a fraction of your visitors will click on the links. Only a fraction of those who go to Amazon will purchase something.
You can increase the conversion rates in a number of ways.
  • comparison tables
  • content marketing
  • keyword research
  • design
  • Buying Intent keywords
Even with a well-optimized site for affiliate conversions you still need a steady stream of visitors.
I wouldn’t be looking to monetize a website until I had 500–1000 visitors per month. Until then your energy is best focused on increasing visitors.

Kinds of Amazon Affiliates

Niche Marketers - niche marketers use keyword research and competitive research to identify potentially profitable affiliate sites. They look for the perfect sized niche that is underserved. A niche is selected that has sufficient monthly volume - one that is not dominated by national brands and large sites.
Bloggers - Maybe you are a travel or fashion blogger. Some other trendsetting and reporting blogger. You may want to introduce your audience to some cool new product they will love. You can get a commission for that with affiliate marketing.
Social Marketers- larger bloggers with a social media presence can also be a part of Amazon influencer program.
Schools, Organization - These are great for Amazon affiliate sales because you have a built-in audience. You do need to remember that Amazon will not pay a commission for sales from friends and relatives. Really the trust value is so high that any website can feel safe in adding Amazon affiliate products where appropriate.
Good luck on your journey. The nice thing about affiliate marketing is that you invest very little. No products to buy or create. No drop shipping orders and delays to deal with. Just set up a simple website and start building an audience. The greatest investment is your time.
